Deutsches Currywurst Museum – A Museum Dedicated to an Iconic German Snack Food:

Berlin Currywurst

It seems that the Currywurst (bratwurst with curry sauce) is as much a part of Berlin as the Brandenburg Gate.  Believe it or not, Currywurst is the signature dish of the German capital. Each year about 800 million portions of Currywurst are consumed in Germany and of that, 70 million portions of currywurst are eaten by Berliners.

Signature Dish of Berlin

The Currywurst, the German equivalent of hot dogs in America or fish and chips in Britain, has inspired more stories, more preferences and more celebrity connoisseurs than any other local German specialty food.  Every candidate for Bürgermeister of Berlin (the mayor’s office) is photographed by a currywurst stand.

The currywurst is often sold as a take-away food, Schnellimbisse (snacks), or as street food. Its cult status has resulted in this snack food having its own museum, the Deutsches Currywurst Museum.

The German Curry Sausage Museum in Berlin presents a unique interactive exhibition devoted to currywurst and its place in everyday life, its fans and the many Berliners who swear by this fast food.

This museum offers an interactive and multimedia experience, and has won both the Art Directors Club Award and the One Show Award. One highlight is a walk-in snack bar where visitors can change their perspective and take a peek behind the scenes. Stand-up tables with ketchup bottle audio points re-create the snack bar experience, and there‘s an infotainment trail specially for children.

In the Spice Chamber, visitors can sniff out the secret spices that go into the currywurst sauce at the sniffing stations.  And you can also find out what ‘curry type’ you are.

The Currywurst Museum offers guided tours which take about 45 minutes or alternatively, you can make your own way around with their audio guide.

A portion of the famous delicacy (served by the museum as currywurst in the cup) is included in the admission price, enabling visitors to take in – literally – the exhibition theme.  And if that’s not enough, you can enjoy a wide range of Currywurst in the Museum Snack Lounge.

The Currywurst Museum is a fun place to take the kids to learn all about Berlin’s favourite snack food and to also taste it.  The Museum is located at Schützenstraße 70, close to Checkpoint Charlie.
