One Christmas Market, 12 Christmas Traditions at the 2019 Rüdesheimer Weihnachtsmarkt der Nationen:

Rüdesheimer Weihnachtsmarkt der Nationen

Rudesheim Christmas Market of Nations

There are many Christmas markets in Germany, but the pretty historic town of Rüdesheim has a Christmas market that’s special. Called the Christmas Market of Nations or Rüdesheimer Weihnachtsmarkt der Nationen, there are over 120 stalls at the market, representing the Christmas traditions from 12 nations.  And this year the Rüdesheim Christmas Market of Nations celebrates its 27th anniversary.

Christmas Market of Nations

The market is held in the heart of the historic Old Town, on the Market Square. From the Marktstrasse via Oberstrasse into Rüdesheim’s famous Droselgasse and through to Rhine Street – the Rüdesheimer Weihnachtsmarkt is spread throughout the streets of the Old Town.

For a whole month prior to Christmas, Rüdesheim puts on its Christmas charm with a full program of carols, entertainment and performances by well known radio and television celebrities.

Christmas Market Stalls

At the 120 festively decorated Christmas market stalls you’ll find plenty of handmade artwork and handicrafts and before your very eyes you can even watch candles, decorations, wood figures, wood carvings, glass engravings, “schwibbögen” arched candles, mangers, pewter casters and dolls being made. Then of course, you can try famous and traditional Christmas foods from the region, washed down with the famous Rüdesheim mulled wine.  And don’t forget the famous Rüdesheim coffee drink made with locally distilled Asbach Uralt brandy.

The highlight on December 20th is the parade for St. Thomas. In this traditional pageant, minstrels, masked men and others lead a walk around the Old Town and ending at the Breuer’s Rüdesheimer Schloss where special refreshment is offered.

Children’s Christmas Market

Christmas is a special time for children and in the Market Square, Germany´s biggest nativity scene (life-size figures) stand on about 150 square metres of ground. Just next to it is Rüdesheim’s well known Children’s Christmas Market made by children for the children.

Rüdesheim is a lovely travel destination at any time of the year but during the pre-Christmas season the atmosphere is magical.   Like most of Germany’s Christmas markets, a visit to Rüdesheim’s Christmas Market of Nations is well worth the trip.

Rüdesheim Hotels

Breuer’s Rüdesheimer Schloss is a family-run hotel in the Old Town. It’s located in an 18th century building and has a lovely beer garden. It also does a nice Asbach Uralt drink.

Other family-run hotels in the centre of Rüdesheim include Brühls Hotel Trapp and Hotel Rüdesheimer Hof. For the complete list of Rüdesheim am Rhein hotels, see Here.

My husband and I recently visited the Christmas market at Rudesheim. What a fantastic experience.!! It was wonderful to see all the vendors and decorations. One of the best things we purchased at the market was from a stand the sold vinegars. It was a cranberry crema balsamic vinegar and it was fabulous. I wish that I would have bought more.
I would love to get in contact with this vendor. The stand’s name was Eimermcaher Veronica.
The German people were so friendly and helpful. I would love to return one day.
