A relatively newcomer on the Cologne Christmas market scene is the Kölner Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt (Cologne Harbour Christmas Market) held next to the delectable Cologne Chocolate Museum. As the name implies, the Cologne Harbour Christmas Market is held in a picturesque harbour setting overlooking the Rhine, giving a maritime flavour to festive Cologne.

Christmas Market Stalls

With around 70 interesting stalls, the very special Kölner Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt is one of the larger Christmas markets in Cologne – the largest is probably the Cologne Cathedral Weihnachtsmarkt. The harbour and Christmas theme are reflected in the design, decoration, stage performances and goods on sale at this Kölner Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt. Its festively decorated snow-white pagoda tents with wooden floors and pointed roofs reminds visitors of the planks and sails of a ship. While being stylishly modern, the Christmas market also has a cosy festive touch.

Christmas Treats

And this is the bit that we like – the maritime theme also carries through to the food. On offer is a wide variety of fish specialities, fine foods and drinks from around the world. And as with most Christmas markets, visitors will also be able to buy a wide range of high-quality goods and crafts, all on the theme of the harbour, seafaring, Cologne and Christmas. Not to be missed is the impressive 15-metre wooden three-mast boat serving tasty mulled wine out of its hull.

The culture and entertainment program highlight the lively harbour atmosphere and festive mood. From sea shanties to traditional Christmas songs – you will enjoy relaxing here with a delicious mug of mulled wine. For children and families, the “Rhine Pirates” with their sailor’s yarns and pirate juggling are an unmissable highlight of the market.

Other Cologne Attractions

Surrounded by the medieval Malakoff Tower, the historic harbour swing bridge, the much-visited Cologne Chocolate Museum and the Rhine, the new atmospheric Cologne Christmas market by the Rhine is quite an attraction.

From December 26 to January 7, the Christmas market will transform into a New Year’s market.

Getting there:

• On Foot – Schokoladenmuseum is within easy walking distance from the Old Town – it’s a 5-minute walk via beautiful promenade at the bank of the Rhine
• By Bus  – Line 106, Stop Schokoladenmuseum
• By Tram – Line U1,7,9 Stop Heumarkt (walk to the Rhine then right)
• By Car – Car parking: entrance Rheinauhafen, exit at the market
