On Day 6 of our Walking the Prosecco Hills tour, we visit Conegliano:

Day 6 of our Walking the Prosecco Hills tour is a free day. The suggestions on what to do on this day include a visit to Venice, Padova or the nearby town of Conegliano.

Conegliano

We’ve been to Venice and Padova and so we choose to go to Conegliano. The town is known for its wine and the hills around Conegliano are a DOCG wine growing region, not that this swayed our decision.

Conegliano is somewhat undersold by our guide who suggested that its only attraction is the 10th century castle. Although it is only a small town, there are other places of interest if you have the time to explore.

As we head for the castle we walk past the Teatro Accademia. This performing arts theatre is on Piazza Cima, the town’s main square, which takes its name from the famous painter Giambattista Cima. Some of Cima’s frescoes can be seen in Conegliano.

The 10th century castle is situated on a hill that dominates the town. It’s quite a steep climb up along very impressive walls.

There’s a cafe on top of the hill, with nice views of the region and the Dolomites.

We have our sandwich lunch here. The apple pie is very nice.

After lunch, we walk around the hilltop and Tony climbs to the top of the castle which has a small museum.

Getting to Conegliano

Conegliano is easy to get to from Pieve di Soligo. From the main square, bus 132 runs between Conegliano and the town of Valdobbiadene. We buy our tickets from the news agent and at the appointed time we jump on the bus, only to find out later that it’s going in the wrong direction. This bus is behind schedule and hence the mix-up with the time. We actually didn’t mind ending up in the town Valdobbiadene, as we get to see a bit of the countryside and the Valdobbiadene region is famous for its top quality prosecco.

The bus driver is very nice and takes us back to Pieve di Soligo, in time for the bus going in the right direction this time.
