Venice Climate and Weather
In summer the northern parts of Italy are warm with occasional rainfall, but in winter conditions in Venice are dominated by cold, damp and fog. Being located in North-East Italy, the climate in Venice changes dramatically throughout the year. In the winter the temperature can drop below freezing, while in the summer the temperatures can rise to 35C/96F, but as might be expected from its canals, the humidity remains high all year round. Because it is surrounded by water, in Venice cooler temperatures feel colder and the warmer temperatures hotter, something to remember when you’re packing!
Acqua Alta
During the autumn and winter months, especially in November, Venice can suffer from flooding or High Water ("Acqua Alta") when some streets and squares flood. As this is directly related to tides in the Venetian lagoon, it usually only lasts a few hours a day. The city is well prepared with pedestrian routes with special temporary (although narrow!) footbridges to get over the high water to reach the main areas of Venice. A 48 hour tidal forecast is supplied by the city of Venice authorities and shows the expected levels of the high tide each day.
Less than 80 cms is a normal tide with no flooding. A tide above 100 cms will cause minor flooding, whilst tides above 120 cms will begin to cause extensive flooding.
