An Evening with the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in the Auditorium Parco Della Musica:
For lovers of classical music, a concert with the orchestra and choir of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (National Academy of St. Cecilia) is the icing on the cake on any Rome holiday. For, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia is one of the oldest and most prestigious classical music institutions in the world and Santa Cecilia is, after all, the patron saint of music.
The Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia was founded in 1585 by the papal bull (a type of charter issued by the pope). What started as an organization for local musicians, has evolved over the centuries into an institution of world renown. At the Accademia, master courses for instrumentalists, composers and singers are conducted and its modern Multi-media Library has historical and conservation records of the classical music world.
Today the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia is housed in the magnificent Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome designed by none other than architect Renzo Piano. Built on the grounds of the 1960 Summer Olympic Games, the Auditorium Parco Della Musica also incorporates ancient archaeological finds which were uncovered during construction. These can be viewed by the public.
The Auditorium Parco della Musica is one of the largest music complexes in the world today. It comprises three music halls, of which the Sala Santa Cecilia (Santa Cecilia Hall) is the largest – its 3,400 square-metre space holds 2,800 seats. The Santa Cecilia Hall is said to be one of the most innovative concert halls in the world of music. It is specially designed for large orchestral and choral symphonic concerts and its ample stage comfortably holds both an orchestra and choir. Set in the centre and given its modular structure, it allows for perfect visibility and optimal acoustics. Book concerts here to see world famous conductors at work with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia orchestra.
