Day 3 takes us through Valdobbiadene, San Pietro di Barbozza and San Stefano:
Day 3 of our Walking the Prosecco Hills tour is a circular walk which takes us to Valdobbiadene, the heartland of the Prosecco region. We visit one of the better local producers of prosecco, enjoy some tasting and learn about the prosecco-making process.
Best Prosecco Region
The majority of the top winemakers are based right here, among the steep terraced Prosecco Hills, which are said to be the prettiest in the Veneto region.
Our Prosecco Hills Walk
Today’s 10 km walk is more challenging as it’s very hot, there’s no shade along the way and we climb up 400 metres and then down another 400 metres.
Our walk of the Prosecco Hills takes us to Valdobbiadene, San Pietro di Barbozza and San Stefano. The route follows a mix of human-made tracks and paths twisting through the vineyards.
The views of the rolling hills of vineyards and hamlets are simply stunning.
Things you see along the way
Just before lunch, we come across a most unusual sight – a prosecco-vending machine on top of the hill.
Not only does the machine dispense prosecco, you can get hygienically wrapped wine glasses as well. You can also buy trays of cold cuts, cheese and bread to go with your prosecco.
Prosecco Tasting
Towards the end of the walk we arrive at the Pietrovecchio Winery. Our very thirsty walkers are delighted to visit one of the better local prosecco producers and to sample their wines.
The Pietrovecchio family have owned vineyards here for generations, but today only Bruno Pietrovecchio and his daughter Laura are involved in keeping the business alive.
A very pregnant Laura gives a general introduction to the winery and its history.
We then sample different varieties of prosecco, Extra Brut, Brut, Extra Dry and Dry, during a guided wine-tasting. Laura kindly makes us delicious bruschetta, cheese and cold cuts to have with our wine.
Of all the prosecco tastings we’ve had in the Prosecco Hills, the Pietrovecchio prosecco is certainly the best. A bottle of their top prosecco goes for Euros 13.00 only, but unfortunately they do not ship outside of Europe due to costs.
After the prosecco tasting we are driven back to the hotel in the late afternoon.
