La Taverna di San Giuseppe’s Increasing Popularity Makes it Hard to get a Booking:

La Taverna di San Giuseppe

Delicious Tagliatelle Tartufo

Whenever visiting Siena, one of the things that we look forward to is dining at La Taverna di San Giuseppe, our favourite Sienese restaurant. The food is good, the ambience is great and the staff are professional and friendly. It is porcini and tartufo season, our favourite fungi, and the chefs here make great porcini and tartufo pastas.

The Need to Book

The last couple of times we were in Siena, we were so lucky that the lady in charge of bookings squeezed us in, in spite of the restaurant being fully booked. This time round, we went on Sunday, two days in advance, to make sure that we have a booking. We arrived at the restaurant at 5:30 pm and it was shut.

Smiling for the camera, but disappointed

Luckily a couple of the staff had just arrived for work, including the lady in charge of bookings. She told us that they were full for the evening, but kindly invited us in to see if it was possible to find a table. Horror of all horrors, they were fully booked on Tuesday and Wednesday night. In fact, she showed me her booking diary which was fully booked for all of September!

Disappointed!

Since discovering La Taverna di San Giuseppe in 2015, we’ve never visited Siena and not dined at this osteria. We were naturally extremely disappointed. This cinghale (wild boar) might live here, but we don’t, and it will be a while before we get the chance to dine here again.

Cinghale outside La Taverna

On the way out we looked at all the stickers on the outside door and it seems that La Taverna di San Giuseppe have been having Michelin recommendations almost every year for the past few years, hence their busy booking schedule.

If you’re planning on visiting Siena and would like a meal at La Taverna di San Giuseppe, it would be worthwhile, contacting them in advance to make your bookings, or risk leaving hungry like us.
