Getting to San Gimignano by Train, Bus or Car:

How to Get to San Gimignano

San Gimignano is a small Tuscan hill-town situated about half way between Florence and Siena. Although there is no train station in this town and the closest airports in the region are either Firenze or Pisa Airport, San Gimignano is nevertheless easily accessible by car or public transport from Siena or Florence.

Getting to San Gimignano

By Train – from Florence:

  • From Firenze S.M. Novella station there is an hourly direct service to Poggibonsi-S.Gimignano. Journey time is 1hr 4mins. From the Poggibonsi train station there is a bus to San Gimignano.
  • There is also an indirect train service from Firenze Rifredi to Poggibonsi-S.Gimignano, with a change of train at Empoli.

By Train – from Siena:

There are regular train services from Siena to Poggibonsi-S.Gimignano. Journey time is about 30 minutes. From the Poggibonsi train station there is a bus to San Gimignano.

For train timetable and ticket prices, see Trenitalia.

By Bus – from Florence:

The buses from Florence travel from to Poggibonsi (east of San Gimignano) where you have to change for the service to San Gimignano. Total travel time is about 100 mins, which includes a 30 minute stop in Poggibonsi. For bus schedule and fares see www.tiemmespa.it.

By Bus – from Siena:

Tiemme Spa – Toscana Mobilità run regular bus services run from Siena to San Gimignano. Travel time is about 65 minutes.  For bus schedule and fares, see their website www.tiemmespa.it (in Italian only)

Sightseeing Tour

San Gimignano is a small enough town and can be explored during a day excursion from Siena or Florence. The couple of times that we visited San Gimignano, we joined a sightseeing tour from Siena which was much more convenient than catching public transport – travel time was about 40 minutes.  For the list of San Gimignano sightseeing tours from Siena and Florence, see here.

By Car

If you are coming from the North (Milan), take the Autostrada A1 (A1 Motorway  linking Milano-Napoli), heading south. Exit the motorway at Firenze Impruneta and take the Firenze-Siena dual carriageway in the direction of Siena. Exit at Poggibonsi Nord and follow the road signs for San Gimignano (about 11 km).

If you are coming from the South (Rome), take the A1 motorway (Milano-Napoli), heading north. Exit the motorway at Valdichiana and follow the road signs for Siena. At Siena Firenze, take the Firenze-Siena dual carriageway in the direction of Siena. Exit at Poggibonsi Nord and follow the road signs for San Gimignano (about 11 km).

There are car parks to the north and south of town.

By Air

If you are flying into Italy, the closest airports to San Gimignano are Firenze Airport and Pisa Airport.
