Maggio Musicale Fiorentino – Florence

(Season: May – June 2019)
Where better to enjoy an evening of opera than in Florence, the birthplace of opera. The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino is a treat for music and opera lovers to enjoy international quality performances. Maggio Musicale Fiorentino is an annual art festival that includes an opera festival. Held at the very modern Teatro del Maggio ( Piazza Vittorio Gui, 1, 50144 Firenze), the acoustics are said to be brilliant.

Festival dell’Arena di Verona

(Season: June-Sept 2019)
The spectacular Arena di Verona is home to the annual Verona Arena Festival. Famous operas like Carmen, Aida, Turandot, Nabucco and Barber of Seville are some of the offerings at the Festival.

Carmen

  • The 2019 summer Verona Festival begins with Verdi’s La Traviata directed by Franco Zeffirelli.
  • This is followed by Aida, the queen of operas at the Verona Arena. Directed by Gianfranco de Bosio, there are 15 performances of Aida being offered.
  • Carmen, directed by Hugo de Ana. There will be only one performance of this popular Bizet opera, with Placido Domingo as Conductor.
  • Verdi’s Il Trovatore performances begins on July 20. Directed by Franco Zeffirelli, this opera is a staple of the standard operatic repertoire.
  • Finally, from August 10 to September 6, 2019, Puccini’s Tosca takes centre stage.

Verona Arena Festival is a very popular festival and very often tickets sell out early. If you’re keen on opera or would like a once-in-a-lifetime opera experience in this Roman amphitheatre, book early.

Festival Puccini – Torre del Lago, Lucca

(Season: July – August 2019)
The charming Italian village of Torre del Lago in Lucca, Tuscany is where Puccini lived and composed some of his operatic masterpieces.

As a tribute to the great maestro, the annual Festival Puccini celebrates his great heroines, Turandot, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, etc.

Verdi Festival Parma

(Season: September 2019)
Parma, in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, is famous for more than just its food and rich gastronomical tradition. Verdi was born here and each year the Verdi Festival Parma celebrates the works of their favourite son.

Teatro Rossini, Pesaro

Magnificent Teatro Rossini

Rossini Opera Festival, Pesaro

(Season: August 2019)
The annual Rossini Opera Festival celebrates the life, death and works of Gioachina Rossini who was born here. The operas are held at the magnificent Teatro Rossini as well as at the modern Vitrifrigo Arena.  I know which venue I prefer.

Sferisterio Arena in Macerata

Macerata Opera Festival – Macerata

(Season: July-August 2019)
Even though the Sferisterio Arena is a relatively recent construction (1829), it provides a no less impressive setting for open-air opera productions. The festival takes place in the mild Italian evenings every summer and presents famous works from the operatic repertoire: Puccini, Verdi, Bizet, Mozart, Gounod…

Terme di Caracalla

Terme di Caracalla Festival – Rome

(Season: July-August 2019)
The city’s second largest Roman public baths, the Baths of Caracalla, is a popular tourist attraction. It becomes the backdrop for an open air stage during the summer Opera di Roma festival. This marvellous archaeological site has 8,000 seats and this year features Aida and La Traviata, as well as three ballets.
