MYFACE Tableware was an Unexpected Find in Venice:

Shopping in Venice

Tony with Jacopo in the MYFACE shop

Tableware in Venice? “La Serenissima” is famous for its Murano glass and Burano lace, but tableware? During our numerous trips to Venice we’ve seen our share of the iconic Venetian glass, lacework and arts and crafts. On this trip we did manage to find something unique and interesting – resin-based tableware at the MYFACE shop in the Castello sestiere.

Resin Tableware

Strolling around the back streets of Castello, one of the shop windows caught my attention.

Autumn Wheat collection

A large plate with bright wheat patterns. We went into the shop and saw a range of unique tablewares that are made of resin. Embedded in the plates, bowls, vases, etc. are various actual items of real produce from Italy.

We got talking to Jacopo and he explained that the green tableware from their Spring collection has wheat embedded in it. The wheat and other grasses are from Tuscany. The apples are from the Dolomites in Northern Italy and the oranges are from the South.

A Creation Born out of Need

Jacopo explained that his uncle owns the factory and has been producing these resin products for decades. The family love sailing and the idea for the interesting non-breakable tableware came from being on boats. Finding nice tableware that didn’t break inspired his uncle to create his own range of tableware.

Jacopo complained that one of the frustrations of their business is that their designs are being copied by others – yes, we’ve seen copy versions in Siena. To make sure that we are buying the genuine MYFACE product, we should look out for the logo on each of their tableware. Their logo is embedded in the product. The copy products will not have the embedded logo.

The one exception is the Living Stone range. These were created for a New York design show at the Museum of Modern Art and because of the pebbles, it’s technically not possible to have the logo embedded so only a label is used.

What to buy?

We spent some time in the shop as all the plates and bowls were really pretty and it was difficult deciding what we wanted and how we would use them. The resin tableware is quite tough and can be washed in the washing machine, but it will scratch if a sharp article, like a knife, is applied to it. So we chose products where a knife will not come into contact, such as a salad bowl, dessert bowls, etc.

We bought the products in-store as the catalogue in the shop has 2016 prices. You can buy MYFACE tableware online, but you’ll be paying the slightly more expensive 2019 prices. As we bought a number of pieces, Jacopo offered free shipping and insurance which was an incentive.

I can’t wait to see them when we get back.
