Hotel Ancora Enjoys An Ideal Location in the Centre of Cortina d’Ampezzo:

Hotel Ancora, Cortina Hotel

The Hotel Ancora in the centre of Cortina d’Ampezzo

Hotel Anchora is a family-run hotel right in the centre of the ski resort town of Cortina d’Ampezzo. We stayed here during our September visit and were pleased to find the hotel right on Corso Italia, the main pedestrian street of town.

Our Room at Hotel Ancora

Hotel Ancora was built in the early 19th century and is Cortina’s oldest hotel.  This alpine-style hotel has the characteristic wooden balconies, some of which offer views of Cortina town and the Dolomites.

Our double room (number 77) was small but there was plenty of cupboard space, obviously for storage of ski gear. The room decor was quite basic and the bathroom can be described as minimalist. There was no refrigerator in the room which is fine in winter, however during the summer visit and our bottle of water had to stand on the balcony to keep cool. Room 77 enjoys a small mountain view.

Dinner At Hotel Ancora

We had one dinner in the hotel and the meal was very nice – a primi piatti of gnocchi, followed by fish and a panna cotta dessert. The dishes came covered with a round lid and once everyone at the table had received their dish, the waiters made a show of lifting all the lids simultaneously. The restaurant food was a highlight of the stay, which surprised me.

What We Liked about the Hotel Ancora

  • The location was perfect
  • The hotel restaurant dinner was surprisingly good

What We Weren’t Keen On

  • The hotel is listed as one of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, but unless you are in one of the suites, the experience is not one of a luxury hotel. For a 4-star hotel, I would expect a little more comfort in the room
  • There was no refrigerator in the room
  • The room lacks adequate light for reading
  • Internet in the room costs Euros 10 for 24 hours

Cortina d’Ampezzo is the most popular and fashionable ski resort town in Italy and the hotel room prices here are quite steep during the peak season. If you were paying over Euros 200 per night to stay at any hotel, you would expect a room with a little more creature comfort, however this is probably the price of staying in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

You can book Hotel Anchora here or check out what comparable hotels in Cortina d’Ampezzo are charging.
