Carnevale Masks shop, San Polo, Venice, Italy

Carnevale Masks shop, San Polo, Venice, Italy

Venice is famous for several local crafts that have been produced here for centuries and are hard to get elsewhere: the glassware from the island of Murano, the delicate lace from Burano (rarely found now, most of it’s from China though still of good quality), and the cartapesta (papier-mâché) Carnevale masks.

Piazza San Marco is linked to the Rialto by the busiest, richest and narrowest of shopping streets: the Mercerie. The name is plural, because it is divided into five parts: the Merceria dell’Orologio, di San Zulian, del Capitello, di San Salvador and ‘del 2 Aprile‘. If you like to do famous name shopping, this is the place (though not for the traditional products mentioned above). Look out for all the usual suspects including Max Mara, Sergio Rossi, Cartier, Rolex, Krizia, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and the rest. Calle XXII Marzo is also well worth a visit: here you can find Bulgari, Bruno Magli, Versace, Damiani.

Other areas:

Calle Valleresso, San Marco – Harry’s Bar is on this street, it’s a small alley full of flash boutiques including Gucci, Ferragamo and Dolce and Gabbana.

Calle della Mandorla – shops selling the usual hand-printed/stamped paper, Murano glass and jewellery

La Calle Campo Santa Maria del Giglio, San Marco 2493.
The Santa Maria Novella range of soaps, candles and scents. Ideal presents in great packaging.

For the greatest selection of traditional glass pieces and lace, take a boat to the islands of Murano and Burano.

If you want to take some food home as a souvenir, you can also buy some packages of typical Venetian sweets, such as the zaeti that can be bought in one of the many cake shops in Venice.

Shop Hours

Shops are usually open in the morning from 9am to 12:30 pm, and from 4pm to 7:30pm. Some places may be closed on Wednesdays, so call before you go or ask your hotel concierge.
